Im updating my htaccess on all my domains. where do you guys redirect surfers to?

NelsonN

It depends, what traffic are you going redirect, 404?

Leo
08-17-2004, 08:39 PM
redirect it to a hub

Pookie

404s are some of the worst traffic possible easier to sell that traffic to newbies than converting it lol

now why would you wanna sucker a noob to buy your shit traffic? :feels-hot

What's wrong with 404 traffic?
My current 404 error page has a 'page not found' message followed by a link to my main page which is followed by a full page ad for 4 NastyDollar sites.

Sometimes it seems I get more hits on 404 than any other single page. It would be nice to have something there that would sell.

Leo

404 traffic is mostly traffic that's just trying to see what more free stuff you have on your site therefore unlikely to buy regardless wherever you send the which is why very hard to convert this kinda traffic. 404 traffic also seems to be overwelmingly from foreign origin.

Josea

So it don't really matter much what I have on my 404 error page?

well i think its better to have some sort of ad there than just a message that says "404" on it

Feeder traffic for TGPs/MGPs. I believe that would work even better with thumb preview sites. Just a guess though ;)

I do have an ad.
This is what it currently looks like;
babevue.com/404error.html
Perhaps I should have a banner up on top.

Sent them to a tgp/mgp? My main page is a semi-fake tgp (sponsor hosted galleries and some galleries I picked up from booster.xbiz.com). Al though I need to update it more.

Josea, I don't think it's a good idea to send this type of traffic to a fake TGP/MGP with only FHG + your own galleries since they're freeloaders anyway. You're probably better off trading some of it for more productive traffic.

Maybe not a 404 error... you could be hitted by one of those bots listed in your htaccess file or hotlinked, I dont know.

are there any errors in the htaccess i provided here? do i need to change anything?

PeterLuke
08-18-2004, 04:34 PM
I don't think so Pookie.

the anti-hotlinking portion of my htaccess looks like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://([^.]+\.)?domain\.com.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif)$ - [F]

You're missing this line... RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
whose meaning is... "Ignore if there's no HTTP_REFERER"
Don't think it's what causing your problem though :thinking

Here's my 404:
http://www.sperm-girls.com/404

converting 1:1515 for the last 50k hits

And here is my Anti-Hotlink .htaccess Tutorial i posted on
Sarcastic-Bastards:

Hey! That's mine!

If a 100K .jpg is hotlinked on a site that gets, say, 1,000 hits a day, that's 100MB of data transferred from your site without a single person actually visiting your site. If you pay money per gigabyte -- this can add up. And if someone were to leech an entire gallery from your site ?

Will My Host Support It?

This is probably the hardest question to give a simple answer to. Many hosts support .htaccess but don't actually publicise it and many other hosts have the capability but do not allow their users to have a .htaccess file. As a general rule, if your server runs Unix or Linux, or any version of the Apache web server it will support .htaccess, although your host may not allow you to use it.

A good sign of whether your host allows .htaccess files is if they support password protection of folders. To do this they will need to offer .htaccess (although in a few cases they will offer password protection but not let you use .htaccess). The best thing to do if you are unsure is to either upload your own .htaccess file and see if it works or e-mail your web host and ask them.

Potential Problems

This method relies on the HTTP_REFERER variable (the variable that contains information about the referring page) being properly sent by the visitor's browser. A number of modern browsers as well as some of the anonymous surfing proxies and firewalls allow the user to change this header. These browsers or proxies will thus either transmit HTTP_REFERER headers that have some user-specified value or not bother to transmit them at all. There are also buggy browsers around that unpredictably transmit the wrong HTTP_REFERER header on occasion.

When this occurs your visitor may not be able to view the image even when he is on your site.
Hopefully the percentage of people who encounter this is small, but you have to be aware that these situations do occur.

Now it gets interesting

The usual approach is to instruct the server to deny all requests for images where the HTTP referer header is not either from your own site (or blank). Thus, only people actually browsing your web site - or those whose browsers are not passing referrer headers for whatever reason - will be able to see the image.

A second approach is to redirect off-site traffic to an alternate image - either a general "hotlinking denied" image, or (in the case of some mischievous webmasters) something more shocking. That's what we will do.

Add the following code to your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} .*jpg$|.*gif$|.*png$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !yoursite\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !friendlysite\.com [NC]* *
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !google\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !search\?q=cache [NC]

RewriteRule (.*) /denied.jpg

Let's go through this one line at a time. RewriteEngine On gets mod_rewrite ready to do its stuff. First come the conditions:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} .*jpg$|.*gif$|.*png$ [NC]

Okay. First condition: the file name must end in .jpg, .gif, or .png. This makes sure our hotlink prevention only triggers on images. You might want to change this to include .avi, .mpg, or other similar files.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$

Second condition: the referrer must not be blank. This means that people who aren't passing referrer headers, for whatever reason, will still be able to see your images.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !yoursite\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !friendlysite\.com [NC]

These next conditions allow linking from your own site, and any other friendly sites that you want to allow linking from. Change the sites to your own, of course. Apache isn't psychic.

(Don't know what the ! \ .*$ is all about? It's a regular expression (http://sitescooper.org/tao_regexps.html). If you keep the format the same, you don't need to worry about it.)

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !google\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !search\?q=cache [NC]

Okay. Finally, let's let Google get through. These last conditions allow people using the Google cache and Google Image Search to see your pictures. (You might want to remove this if you don't want people to find your pictures this way)

On to the last line of the .htaccess file, which is:

RewriteRule (.*) /denied.jpg

This last rule silently redirects the request to /denied.jpg . Thanks to the wonder of Apache, this will automatically include all necessary slashes and path information, and not be visible to the end user.

Note:* For some reason, the HTTP specifications misspell "referrer" as "referer".

adminbastard:
I gotta question;
is the .jpg, .gif in this line case sensitive?
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} .*jpg$|.*gif$|.*png$ [NC]

in otherwords if I have pics named pic1.JPG
will this still prevent hotlinking or should the all caps version be added?

the [NC] at the end of each line = No Case
This makes the condition pattern case insensitive, no difference between 'A-Z' and 'a-z'.

may not be worth it other than looking good on web counters.. very poor productivity with this traffic.. if surfers don't click there's no trade, there's no trade there's no growth.. you're better off sending 404s to a hub and buying cheap clicked traffic for your tgp.

PeterLuke

Well, I don't think I ever said that 404 traffic would be productive. I just proposed an other way to waste worthless traffic :D

Same thing with your hub... no clicks, no sales ;)

404 traffic sucks :BangBang:

Josea

Is it even worth while to have a 404 error page if the traffic sucks so bad?

By hub do you guys mean a page or web site which points to other sites you own?

Another Way would be Geo-Redirecting your 404 Traffic -> less bandwith used.

I redirect german traffic to Sexmoney (http://www.sexmoney.com/?adsid=63500) for example, they have German Sites for almost all niches.

Here my Geo-Redirecting Tutorial for those of you who didn't see it at SB =)
You need your own server for that. (well, or a provider who offers mod_geoip + mod_rewrite for apache)
------------------------------------------------

Block users / Redirect users to the approriate website based on their country using MaxMind Apache API.

Download C Library
Download for free from here (http://www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/c/), includes a free GeoIP Country database. The code is licensed under the GPL (=free to use).

Install C Library
This should work on most UNIX and GNU/Linux platforms.

./configure
make
make check
make install

Download Apache Module (mod_geoip)
Download for free from:
here (http://www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/mod_geoip) for Apache 1.3.x.
or here (http://www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/mod_geoip2) for Apache 2.0.x

The code is licensed under the GPL.

Install Apache Module

To build mod_geoip as a dynamically loadable module for apache 1.3x:
apxs -cia -I/usr/local/include -L/usr/local/lib -lGeoIP /path/to/mod_geoip.c

See the included INSTALL for more ways to do it.

Examples

Redirection with mod_geoip and mod_rewrite

Below is an example of how to perform redirection based on country with mod_geoip and mod_rewrite. This configuration should be added to your Apache httpd.conf or .htaccess file.

GeoIPEnable On
GeoIPDBFile /path/to/GeoIP.dat

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{ENV:GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE} ^CA$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.canada.com [L]

Blocking unwanted countries

This blocks traffic from China and Russia

GeoIPEnable On
GeoIPDBFile /path/to/GeoIP.dat

SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE CN BlockCountry
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE RU BlockCountry
# ... place more countries here

Deny from env=BlockCountry

ISO 3166 Country Codes (http://www.maxmind.com/app/iso3166)

Maxmind is also offering commercial Databases to determine region, city, latitude, and longitude information.

Maybe this is usefull for some of you =)

Is it even worth while to have a 404 error page if the traffic sucks so bad?
if you have a low bandwith page you could make a sale once in while from this traffic it may worth. With a hub it's a bit better chance since they are all your own or sponsor sites plus hacktic's geo-redirecting is an excellent idea but could get you blacklisted from some tgps thou if not careful :(

HowlingWulf
08-19-2004, 11:18 AM
i'm stressing out over here... this happened to me before and i got blacklisted at a lot of places

here is an htaccess example:

RewriteCond %haha123;HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.*WebZIP.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %haha123;HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.*Iria.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %haha123;HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.*Stripper.*$ [OR]

etc

Pookie all those user agents make a request for the page and all objects on it. So when the agent makes a request for the surfer, you'll see around 20 hits for each page (one for each image and one for the page itself). So your 10,000 probably includes a few hundred agent requests. Sending those requests to braincash doesn't do a damn thing except inflate your stats as it's just an automated agent. Send them to a blank 403.

Josea

Maxmind is also offering commercial Databases to determine region, city, latitude, and longitude information.
The country database is also available as a commercial database and updated once a month (98% accurate). The free one included with the C library ain't up to date. Better than nothing though ;)

For those like me on FreeBSD you'll find ports for the C Library HERE (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/net/GeoIP/) and for the Apache module HERE (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/www/mod_geoip/) :)

Thanks for the tutorial Hacktic

Pookie all those user agents make a request for the page and all objects on it. So when the agent makes a request for the surfer, you'll see around 20 hits for each page (one for each image and one for the page itself). So your 10,000 probably includes a few hundred agent requests. Sending those requests to braincash doesn't do a damn thing except inflate your stats as it's just an automated agent. Send them to a blank 403.
i made a 90 month sale off it yesterday. so a blank 403 is better? how do i do that?

if you have a low bandwith page you could make a sale once in while from this traffic it may worth. With a hub it's a bit better chance since they are all your own or sponsor sites plus hacktic's geo-redirecting is an excellent idea but could get you blacklisted from some tgps thou if not careful :(
so what would you recommend should be on a hub?

Seems to me I've read that 404 traffic should be directed to a pay-per click program.

any suggestions on a pay per click program?

You could send your traffic to something like SearchFeed.com or FMAO ;)

The only one I ever knew about was offshoreclicks.

Most TGPs despise that one though and will blacklist you.

If it were me I would use freeticketcash from the Hawgs.

It's not a payperclick but it's just as good. .80(I think) per e-mail

It used to be $1 per e-mail now it's .75

It means it works they had to lower it because they were payign out to much money with it.

Thats my link if you decide to go with that
